Researchers Find Odds of Another Hurricane Harvey Increasing

May 16th, 2018 Hurricane Damage
Long & Long Property Insurance Loss Attorneys, Mobile Alabama

According to researchers, global warming and record-breaking temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico contributed to the intensity of Hurricane Harvey. The monumental storm—which destroyed homes, closed businesses and shattered lives—brought five feet of rain to southeast Texas.

The National Center for Atmospheric Research calls water over 80 degrees an indicator of hurricane formation. Leading up to Harvey, the Gulf reached approximately 86 degrees—directly impacting the amount of rainfall. As climate change increases both the frequency and severity of storms, researchers state that—over the last 25 years—the chance of another storm of this caliber hitting Texas has increased by six times.

With another hurricane season around the corner, many Houston families—still caught in the aftermath of Harvey—are trying to rebuild. With so many still in need, trying to prepare for another catastrophe can seem impossible.

What Can Harvey Victims Do if Repair Costs were Underestimated?

While the requirement for flood insurance policyholders to submit an initial Proof-of-Loss (POL) document was waived after Harvey, the requirement to submit a POL for supplemental payments was not. If you disagree with your current payment, if the adjuster made errors or underestimated repair costs, or if you discover additional damage; you must submit a POL within one year of filing your initial claim to receive any supplemental payment.
